An academic institution of international reputation and recognition, the Banaras Hindu University was established in the year 1916, and is situated in Varanasi. BHU is one of the greatest and historically important centers of learning in India. One of the largest universities in India in terms of India, the majestic BHU campus sprawls across an area of approx. 1300 acres. The other campus of BHU is located in Barkacha, Mirzapur that has an area of approx. 2700 acres. The university has 124 departments, 14 faculties, 4 Interdisciplinary Centers, and 3 Institutes, and 3 Schools. The university also has a number of research centers, 10 Departments of Special Assistance Programs and 6 Advanced Learning Centers. 4 Degree Colleges in Varanasi are affiliated to BHU. The campus houses ITT BHU or the engineering college, and Institute of Medical Sciences along with Sir Sunderlal Hospital. Big auditorium, large playgrounds, flying club, and utilities and services like Fruit Preservation Center, Printing Press, Canteens, and the Employment and Information Bureau are some other attractions of the University. Apart from India, students from Asia, Africa, Middle East, Africa, and the USA also come to BHU. The prominent university has 2000 teachers, 20000 students, and 5000 non-teaching staff.

Affiliated Colleges of BHU: A number of high-repute colleges are affiliated with BHU. These include:

Admission Time: Application forms for getting admissions in the PG and UG courses of BHU are available in the month of February every year. BHU conducts entrance tests for UG (Undergraduate) and PG (Post Graduate) courses in the month of May. For the M.Phil. and Ph.D. courses, the tests are held in the month of August and October. For MBA at FMS BHU, the online application process starts in the month of September.

Online Application: To get admission in the BDS and MBBS courses students have to participate in NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) examination and subsequently participate in counseling. Students can now easily apply for the UG, PG and other courses of BHU online. The main web portal of BHU has all the information related to the eligibility conditions for particular courses as well, that the candidates can review at the time of applying. The portal is live for application at the aforesaid months of a year. The online application process has below given important steps.

Registration: Students can log onto the online admission portal of BHU and get themselves registered. They need to have an email id and a phone number for the purpose. Fee for the course application can be paid through net banking, or through the debit or credit cards.The candidate has to select the courses for which he/she wishes to apply for, from the list of courses provided on the application web page of the admission portal.

Uploading Documents: Before actually starting the online application process, students need to have certain documents ready with them. These include:

  • Scanned photograph and scanned signature.
  • Identity card, for instance, passport, aadhar card, driving license, voter ID, PAN card or any other valid government ID card and number.

Document Verification: At the time of admission, the students should be required to be present for the verification of the documents at the specified and provided date and time.

Application Fee: The application for the Undergraduate Entrance Test (UET), Postgraduate Entrance Test (PET), and the Ph.D. programs is Rs. 300 for SC/ST/PWD students and candidates. The fee is Rs. 600 for the candidates of general category. The application fee for applying to other courses like MBA at FMS (Faculty of Management Studies) BHU is Rs. 800 for the SC/ST candidates and 1,500 for candidates of General Category.

Mode of Admissions:
UG & PG Admissions: BHU may admit students through entrance tests, or in some cases, directly.
Entrance-Test Based Admission: For most of the courses at the UG, PG and Ph.D. levels, BHU takes admission tests. The UET and PET admission tests can be taken to get admission in the requisite courses. For some courses like MBBSB.Tech. and MBA, students have to participate in examinations like NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test), IITJEE (Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination) and CAT (Common Aptitude Test).
Merit-Based Admission: For some courses, BHU also has a merit-based admission process, where direct admissions are provided.
Students are admitted to the various colleges, departments, faculties, and institutions of the university on the basis of their performance or marks obtained in the entrance tests.

Ph.D. Admissions: BHU also conducts the Ph.D. and integrated Ph.D.+M.Phil. courses.
Eligibility Criteria: Candidates need to have at least 55% marks at PG level. When they satisfy the eligibility conditions, they can apply for the course online. They also have to appear for the RET or Research Entrance Test conducted by BHU. There is also a RET-exempted category, where an exemption can be provided when the conditions are satisfied.
Tests Included: The candidate has to undertake 2 tests for getting admission in BHU Ph.D. programs. Test A is for accessing the subjective knowledge of the student, while Test B involves a personal interview and a Research Proposal. Apart from Varanasi, the BHU test centers (for Test A) are also located at other major cities of India.

MD / MS / MDS Admissions: Admission to the PG level courses at the Institute of Medical Sciences at BHU are provided on the basis of marks obtained by students in examinations including NEET (MDS) and NEET (PG). The application form for the courses is available in the month of February. Students should be registered with MCI (Medical Council of India) to apply for MD/MS programs at BHU.
Application Fee: The application fee for the MD/MS programs at IMS BHU is Rs. 1500 for candidates belonging to General and OBC category. For candidates belonging to the SC, ST and PH categories, the fee is Rs. 1000 only. The fee can be deposited both online and offline.
Selection: Selection of candidates for the MD/MS programs is done on the basis of the ranks they achieve in the aforesaid examinations.

Foreign Students: Students from more than 130 countries and from different continents come to BHU for higher studies. They need to submit the application to the Indian mission located in their country. Their mission in India can also submit the application.
