What is Permutations and Combinations?

Permutations means Arrangements that is the possible number of ways we can arrange given things and Combination means Selection that is the possible number of ways we can select things.

What is the Difference between Permutations and Combinations?

First difference is in there definition that Combination means selection and Permutation means Arrangements.

In Permutation (or Arrangement) order of things does not matter

In Combination (Selection) order does matter a lot.

Here I am giving you and Example

Suppose we have 4 chocolates/toffees

1. Melody  2. Eclairs  3. Alpenlibe  4. Mango bite

Now you have to select a pair of them

#Suppose you have selected Eclairs at first and then selected Melody at second.

 

Now again You have to select one pair

#Suppose you have selected Melody at first and Eclairs at second

Now if You see in both condition, You have selected the same thing Eclairs and Melody. Hence order does not matter here as you selected same thing.

 

But In Permutation (Arrangements) If I ask you to arrange these four chocolates/ toffees in pair.

Then One will arrange Melody at first and Eclairs at second.

and other will arrange Eclairs at first and Melody at second.

These are two different arrangements and hence Order does matter in Permutations.
