What is Sequence and Series?

Let’s understand Sequence First.

Sequence : Numbers written in a definite or Sequential order is called a Sequence of Numbers.

For Example: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

Another Example: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10

They both are in Definite orders as first example shows addition of 1 (one) at every next step and similarly in second example there is a multiple of 2 (two).

Sequence is of Three types:

  • Arithmetic Progression (AP)
  • Geometric Progression (GP)
  • Harmonic Progression (HP)

Arithmetic Progression (AP) : If the difference between two consecutive terms is Same then the Sequence is called an Arithmetic Progression (AP).

For Example : 2, 4, 6, 8, 10

Geometric Progression (GP) : If the ratio of any two consecutive terms in a sequence is Same then the Sequence is called an Geometric Progression (GP).

For Example: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32

Here Ratio of any two consecutive term is 2 (That is 4/2 = 8/4 = 16/8 = 32/16 = 2)

Harmonic Progressions :  Sequence of Numbers whose reciprocals are in Arithmetical progression.

For Example: 1, 1/3, 1/5, 1/7

Reciprocal of these Quantities = 1, 3, 5, 7

We know 1, 3, 5, 7 is in Arithmetical progression (AP), Hence Sequence 1, 1/3, 1/5, 1/7 is in Harmonic Progressions (HP).

SERIES: Series is a Sum of the Sequence terms.

Suppose we have a sequence: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10

Series will be 2 + 4 + 6 + 8 + 10
